Silk screen-printing
Silk screen-printing is one the most popular methods of printing directly onto a garments such as t shirt screen printing and sweatshirts screen printing. Pressing special inks through a screen (traditionally made from silk) produces a silkscreen print directly onto the materials surface.
The number of colours applied is limited by the numbers of ‘print heads’ on either a manual or machine press.

Basic print methods:

‘Spot’ or ‘block’ colour printing – this method of printing is the most common on clothing and materials. Each colour is a separate ‘solid’ area. For silk screen each colour requires a screen.
Advantage > specific colour matching, good reproduction quality, colours only limited by machinery
Limitations > not good for tones or complex colour imagery

Half tone – this method is used for images that contain areas where one colour bleeds into another or progresses from light to dark.

Process printing (CMYK) – this method of printing is used for complex multi-coloured images (such as photographs) that either blend into each other or contain tonal areas of more than one colour. The process is the same as that of regular press (paper) printing, using a screen for each of four colours:
Cyan Yellow Magenta black. The four colours are laid over each other in a specific order to produce a final image that represents the colours of the original image.
Limitations > can only be printed on white background/material

Simulated process - this method of printing is similar to process printing but is specifically for silk screen printing on coloured materials.
